
Ice Complicates Cleanup in Yellowstone’s Rare Winter Oil Spill (National Geographic, January 2015): Though it wasn’t a particularly huge spill, the 2015 breach of Bridger’s Poplar pipeline under the Yellowstone River happened in freezing conditions, offering another example of how tough it can be to catch oil in icy, moving water.

Coal-Dependent Arkansas Faces Stiff Emissions Target and a Running Clock (National Geographic, August 2014): When the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Power Plan proposal came out, my editor told me, “pick a state that would be interesting and go there.” Evaluating the energy and emissions portfolios of all the states against their proposed targets was no simple task, but I settled on Arkansas (not, alas, Hawaii). “Fantasy” Fuel from Corn Waste Gets Big U.S. Test (National Geographic, September 2014): Deep in northern Iowa, ethanol producer POET and chemicals conglomerate DSM are engaged in a $275 million experiment aimed at producing biofuel from corn waste at commercial scale. I went out to the project’s grand opening near the tiny town of Emmetsburg, and in the process saw more corn than I’ve ever seen in my life.
